Maki Sushi
Classic hand-rolled sushi with rice, nori and fresh fillings, sliced into perfect bite-size pieces – a favourite across Sushi Jiro restaurants.
What Is Maki Sushi?
Maki, sometimes referred to as makizushi, is a classic Japanese dish that is made with nori, sushi rice and a range of fillings such as vegetables and fresh seafood.
The word “maki” literally translates to “roll”, which is very fitting for this delicious sushi snack. All the ingredients are rolled together with precision and carefully cut into bite-sized pieces that you can easily share with your friends and family.
Maki sushi pairs perfectly with other seafood-based Japanese dishes, such as Nigiri and Sashimi, adding a burst of flavour to any plate or platter.

Types of Maki at Sushi Jiro
At Sushi Jiro, you’ll find various types of Maki to delight your tastebuds. And since each one offers something truly unique, deciding on your favourite might be harder than you think.
Classic Thin Rolls (Hosomaki)
Simple yet satisfying, hosomaki comes with one main filling. Each piece is wrapped in a thin roll of nori, with tuna, salmon, cucumber or avocado taking centre stage in the middle of the roll. This classic option is a minimalist delicacy for sushi purists looking for a lighter snack.
Thicker Rolls for Big Flavour (Futomaki)
For Maki that’s packed full of flavour, look no further than futomaki. These thicker sushi rolls are made with multiple fillings. Mixed vegetables and chicken and avocado are some of the more traditional options, but ours comes with inari, crabstick, salmon, tobiko, egg, cucumber and avocado.
Vegetarian & Vegan Maki Options
For our plant-based sushi lovers, we’ve got vegan and veggie options that are just as delectable as everything else on our menu. Some of the more popular options include avocado, inari, cucumber and vegetable tempura, but we also have vegan salmon alternatives too. No matter which one you go for, you’re guaranteed a truly colourful dish that your tastebuds will thank you for.
Please note: availability can vary depending on the Sushi Jiro restaurant.
Family-Friendly Maki Rolls
Because Maki is cut into easy-to-hold pieces, each roll makes a great snack for families with children. Its mild flavours and carefully cooked fillings, are an excellent introduction to Japanese cuisine.
How to Enjoy Maki Sushi the Right Way
There’s only one way to properly enjoy maki sushi. You get everything you can out of the experience. That means exploring our menu to find the best pairings and bringing your favourite people along to share with.
Here’s what we’d recommend:
- Pick the perfect pairings: Combining your maki with nigiri and sashimi provides plenty of variety for both beginners and seasoned sushi-lovers, while miso soup is a warm welcome as an added side dish.
- Follow simple etiquette guidance: Use your chopsticks or your fingers to pick up the maki and then lightly dip the edge of the roll into soy sauce. This will elevate the flavours for the most delicious bite. Try to eat each roll in one go to get the full impact of its delicate blend of sweet and savoury, then cleanse your palate between rolls, using pickled ginger or a sip of water.
- Share your love of maki: Eating maki is a social activity, so you’ll enjoy it the most when you’re sharing it with your friends and family. Makizushi is a great option for casual catch-ups, family dinners, office platters and lunch dates.
