Nori Taco

A crisp seaweed shell filled with seasoned sushi rice, fresh seafood and vegetables. The Nori Taco is our modern take on hand-held sushi, made fresh at Sushi Jiro.

What is a Nori Taco?

The Nori Taco takes everything people love about sushi and rebuilds it in a completely different shape. Instead of rolling the nori around the rice, the seaweed is shaped and crisped into a shell, then filled like a taco with seasoned sushi rice, fresh seafood, vegetables and sauces.

The result is familiar and new at the same time. The flavours are pure sushi, but the texture is entirely different. Where a maki roll is soft throughout, a Nori Taco gives you a crisp shell that snaps against the soft rice and filling. It is hand-held, easy to eat and impossible to miss on a plate.

Nori tacos sit in the modern half of our menu, alongside aburi and our signature rolls. They are the dish we point people to when they say they have tried everything sushi has to offer.

Types of Nori Taco at Sushi Jiro

Our chefs build nori tacos fresh through the day, with fillings that range from familiar favourites to bolder combinations.

Classic Seafood Nori Tacos

Fresh salmon, tuna or prawn layered over seasoned rice with avocado and a light dressing. These are the best place to start, keeping the flavours close to the sushi you already know while introducing the crisp shell.

Spicy and Signature Nori Tacos

For diners who want more punch, our spicy tuna and tempura prawn nori tacos bring heat, crunch and richness together. The tempura filling in particular works beautifully against the crisp nori shell, giving you two different textures in the same bite.

Vegetarian and Vegan Nori Tacos

Plant-based options include avocado, cucumber, pickled vegetables, inari and seaweed salad, built with the same care as our seafood tacos. The crisp shell and fresh fillings make these satisfying in their own right rather than an afterthought. Availability varies by store.

Family-Friendly Nori Tacos

The taco shape makes these an easy win with children and first-time sushi eaters. There is no cutlery to manage, the format is familiar, and milder fillings like cooked prawn, chicken teriyaki and avocado make them approachable for younger diners.

How to Enjoy Nori Tacos

Nori tacos are best eaten fresh and simply. A few pointers:

  • Eat them soon after they arrive. The crisp nori shell is the whole point, and it softens once it sits. Within a few minutes is ideal.
  • Use your hands. Like a real taco, pick it up and eat it. Chopsticks will only make it harder.
  • Skip the heavy dipping. Nori tacos are usually dressed already, so a light touch of soy at most. Too much and the shell gives way.
  • Pair with something warm. Miso soup or a hot green tea balances the crunch and freshness nicely.
  • Order a few varieties. Because each filling eats quite differently, a mixed selection is more interesting than three of the same.

Nori Tacos for Every Occasion

Nori tacos are one of the most photogenic things on our menu, which makes them a natural fit for events and shared platters. They hold their shape well on a grazing table, they are easy for guests to pick up without plates or cutlery, and they give a sushi spread something guests have often not seen before.

They also work well as part of a wider selection, sitting comfortably alongside nigiri, maki, sashimi, uramaki, gunkan and temaki. Speak with your local team about catering and platter options, or build your own selection online.

frequently asked questions

1. What is a nori taco?

A nori taco is sushi served in a crisp seaweed shell rather than a roll. The nori is shaped and crisped, then filled with seasoned sushi rice, fresh seafood or vegetables, and a light dressing. It is eaten with the hands like a regular taco.

2. How is a nori taco different from a hand roll?

A hand roll, or temaki, uses soft nori wrapped into a cone. A nori taco uses a crisp, firm shell shaped like a taco. The fillings are similar but the texture is completely different.

3. Are nori tacos raw?

Not always. We offer both raw options such as salmon and tuna, and cooked options such as tempura prawn and chicken teriyaki, so there is something for every diner.

4. Can nori tacos be vegetarian or vegan?

Yes. Our plant-based nori tacos include avocado, cucumber, pickled vegetables and inari. Availability varies by store.
